The Philippine National Police (PNP) welcomed on Tuesday, Oct. 19, the indictment of Julian Ongpin, a son of billionaire and a person of interest in the death of artist Bree Jonson, for possession of cocaine that was found inside a hostel in La Union last month.
The illegal drugs case, according to the Department of Justice, will be filed again before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office which earlier ordered the release of Ongpin based on the case filed by the local police.
PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said the decision of the DOJ is but proof that justice system works in the country.
“We welcome this significant development in the criminal complaint filed against Ongpin. This shows that the justice system in the Philippines is working and that the rule of law applies to all," said Eleazar.
Ongpin was initially arrested for violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 when 12.6 grams of cocaine were discovered when the local police responded to the alleged suicide of Jonson.
The case that would be filed against Ongpin is a non-bailable offense.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the death of Johnson of the National Bureau of Investigation is still on-going.
Eleazar reiterated that the organization would extend any form of assistance in the investigation of Jonson’s death.
