There’s a nature trail in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija that gives bike enthusiasts a good reason to get off the pedal and stare at God’s masterpiece. It's called Colosboa Hills and it is also known as the town’s New Zealand.
Through the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Lakbay Norte tourism initiative, we discovered the 10-hectare nature park that boasts of a picturesque landscape composed of vast plains, old trees, tall grass, green mountains, and rolling hills with farm animals roaming around.
More than a site for leisure, the local government developed some portion of the land to a mountain and cross country bike trail in 2018. This could also be a race track venue for national and international bike championship competitions, which they hope to host when the pandemic eases. The LGU is starting early as by the end of the month, it is already hosting a local bike competition.
Edrie Ocampo, Cuyapo’s tourism consultant for bike tourism, designed the track. He said that Colosboa Hills has three kilometers of combined downhill and uphill all-weather single track, categorized as Cross Country Olympic (XCO) blue trail for intermediate and advance level as of the moment. “Beginners, however, shouldn't be disappointed since setting up trails for all levels are in the pipeline,” he said.
"The flowy trail is a challenging course but with a beautiful scenery. With its technical features, it can really test riders’ skills, endurance, and stamina. And with a majestic view, it can reduce the riders' stress and improve relaxation,” added Edrie, who is also a brand ambassador for Specialized Bike Philippines and Fox Racing Philippines.
The scenic Colosboa Hills, which you can enter for free, is not limited only to bike enthusiasts. Families and barkadas are also allowed to camp, picnic, and hike in designated areas.
One of the main attractions is the view of Mt. Bangkay, a mountain believed to be a graveyard during the war. Contrary to its name, its lush greens could serve as perfect backdrops for photos.
What you don't want to miss in Colosboa is café hut called Tambayan ni Berto, which is only open every weekend for now. Apart from Barako coffee and beverages, it also offers local delicacies like pancit guisado, beef papaitan, sinigang na hipon, among others. The café also serves meals such as silog, seafood, and Pinoy food in platters.
According to Mark Kim Taguiam, officer-in-charge of Cuyapo’s tourism, future plans in Colosboa Hills include adventure rides like zip bike, giant swing, and spider web.
