CAFGU killed in Iloilo encounter

ILOILO CITY — An auxiliary personnel of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) was killed in an encounter between government forces and communist rebels in Calinog town, Iloilo province.

The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) identified the fatality as Dwight Misinas, who was also from Calinog.

“He was one of our dedicated and passionate CAFGUs,” said Captain Kim Apitong, 3ID spokesperson.

Apitong said that Misinas was killed when the 12th Infantry Battalion (12 IB) clashed with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels morning of October 13.

Misinas was with 12 IB soldiers, who were going to Masaroy village to provide security for a construction of farm-to-market road, when the five NPA rebels engaged in a 10-minute firefight and Misinas was hit.

The 12 IB soldiers and the CAFGUs were there when intelligence reports reached them that the NPA rebels would attack the construction site by setting on fire construction equipment.

While a CAFGU was killed, the attempted extortion activities of the NPA rebels were aborted.
