Former Pres. Arroyo files congressional bid; assured of Lakas-CMD backing

Notwithstanding a sure win in her new congressional bid, former President and Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will still expect strong support from her Lakas-Christian Muslim Democracts (Lakas-CMD) colleagues.

Arroyo, one of the founders of the political party, is not expected to be challenged in her candidacy as congresswoman of Pampanga’s 2nd congressional district. She won three consecutive terms in the same position despite being barred from campaigning during her second term in 2013.

Political analysts believe that Arroyo will be seeking another term as speaker of the 19th Congress.

House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin G. Romualdez, Lakas-CMD president, was joined by fellow party officer in expressing their support for Arroyo’s congressional bid.

“We strongly support the former President’s decision to return to public service, and to represent her constituents from the 2nd District of Pampanga,” said Lakas-CMD officials in a statement.

“Mrs. Arroyo has a proven track record with excellent credentials in leading our country to greater heights. Given her abilities, competence, fairness, sound judgment, commitment and focused leadership, she will be a very promising leader and a tremendous asset to the incoming 19th Congress,” the party statement read.

It added: “She was very diligent and hard-working during her stint as President of our country and Speaker of the House of Representatives. She leaves no stone unturned in the performance of her duties and always ensured that they were done with excellence and compassion for the people.” Arroyo will be alternating for her son, incumbent Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo, currently chairman of the House Committee on Energy.
