Iloilo extends winning streak in PCAP online tourney

Iloilo stretched its winning streak to 10 matches to remain unbeaten in the Southern Division of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines’s (PCAP) third conference online tournament over the weekend.

The Iloilo Kisela Knights first crushed the Mindoro Tamaraws, 17-4, then disposed of the Negros Kingsmen, 13.5-7.5, to strengthen their hold of the top spot.

Grandmaster Joey Antonio, National Master Giovanni Mejia, NM John Michael Silvederio and Fritz Bryan Porras spearheaded Iloilo with victories in both blitz and rapid events where they dominated Mindoro, 6-1, and 11-3, respectively.

Against Negros, Iloilo had to dig deep in winning its blitz duel, 4.5-2.5.

Cesar Mariano, Mark Jossel Mariano and Porras bested their blitz rivals while Antonio, Giovanni Mejia and Silvederio agreed to draws. Woman FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia was the lone casualty with a defeat over Rowelyn Joy Acedo on Board 3.

But the Kisela Knights showed strength in rapid as they walloped the Kingsmen, 9-5.

Meanwhile, Negros remained at second behind Iloilo with 8-2.

Prior to bowing to the Kisela Knights, the Kingsmen prevailed over the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, 13.5-7.5.
