There are now almost 62 million registered voters for the May 2022 polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Monday.

"As early as June we have already reached our initial target of registering 4 million new and reactivated voters," Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in an online forum.

"We now stand at almost 62 million registered voters for 2022," he added.

The poll official also lauded those who are still registering in the last days of registration.

"A salute to every Filipino citizen...every citizen braving the long lines in order to beat the deadline," said Jimenez.

Last week, the poll official said those planning to register for the upcoming polls should expect long lines when they go to the local poll offices in the last few days of the voter registration.

"The lines will really be long...Those queuing should expect that already," said Jimenez.

He then urged applicants to lineup early.

"Let us line up early and hope that they will make the cut off of the Comelec office," Jimenez said.

The voter registration period will end on Sept. 30.
