WATCH: Whale shark trapped in Bacolod fish pen

BACOLOD CITY — A whale shark was sighted on the waters of Barangay Banago here over the weekend.

In a video posted by Luniza Indoma on Monday, a whale shark was seen moving around inside a fish pen.

According to P/Ens. Kimberly Albia, deputy commander of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Negros Occidental, the whale shark was trapped in the fish pen for two days believed to be looking for food.

Albia said the whale shark was believed to be part of a group of three whale sharks that were also spotted in Antique last month.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, a team from PCG dived into the waters and checked for the whale shark but it was nowhere to be found. Thus, they presumed that it got out of its own.

Albia said they were supposed to put a tag for tracking and identification of the whale shark, but upon checking on it again on Wednesday, Sept. 22, it was no longer there.

The PCG believed that the presence of the said fish here was an indication that the water here is good.

Albia also urged the public to immediately contact authorities if they spotted whale sharks, as the fish could get easily stressed when approached by people.
