REFLECTIONS TODAY
At work or in similar contexts, we are given tasks or positions with power or authority that come with them. Our being “designated” or chosen gives us a sense of privilege, honor, but also of responsibility and accountability. There are sets of rules or parameters within which we are to carry out our functions. We feel a sense of being “missioned” by the company to which we belong. The closed group of the twelve disciples or apostles of Jesus was sent in his name. They must have felt a sense of pride being able to share in his mission and being able to do the extraordinary things he was doing.
Do we feel the same belongingness where we are now as an employee or a member? Do we carry out our duties with pride and diligence because we share in the vision and mission of our company? Do we look at our “secular” tasks as our way of bringing God, as it were, to the marketplace? Are we intent on showing the face of God in the world through what we do and how we do things? Do we feel we are not just here “on vacation” but really on mission?
GOSPEL • Lk 9:1-6 1
Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. 4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. 5And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” 6Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.
