For a teachers’ group, the opening of School Year (SY) 2021-2022 - particularly the first week of classes - is far from being being “successful” as claimed by the Department of Education (DepEd).
“A mere opening of the school year (not the school) does not warrant its success,” said Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) on Monday, Sept. 20.
DepEd formally opened the new school year on Sept. 13 under a distance/blended learning set-up.
During the National School Opening Day Program, Education Secretary Leonor Briones declared that the opening of classes for SY 2021-2022 is a success -- echoing the same DepEd declaration of preparedness and victory last school year, Oct. 5, when the school year commenced despite the pandemic.

However, Briones’ declaration of “success” did not sit well wit the group, noting that the DepEd “seems to ignore the lessons from last year’s implementation of blended learning --- the shortcomings and challenges.”
Moreover, TDC alleged that DepEd “continuously denies” the protection, rights and welfare of teachers.
“Our teachers are deprived of the rightful benefits and necessary assistance while rendering their services,” the group said.
For TDC, even the 99 percent passing grades for the learners nor the 27 million enrollees recorded this year “cannot guarantee learning.” This, it added, is the main reason why we have schools.”

While it agreed that the country country is in a difficult time due to the crisis brought about by the pandemic, TDC said that DepEd can do better in implementing learning delivery by addressing the concerns and gaps pointed out by the stakeholders - including parents, learners and teachers.
“We also believe that the DepEd, with an open heart and a firm resolve can do better than insist on its brand of distance learning or the hasty return of face to face classes,” TDC said.
