After the first week of classes, students who enrolled for School Year (SY) 2021-2022 have breached the 27 million mark based on the data released by the Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday, Sept. 17.
Based on DepEd’s Learner Information System (LIS) Quick Count, there are 27,583,701 students enrolled in this SY. This, DepEd said, is 105.2 percent of the enrollment in SY 2020-2022 recorded at 26.2 million.

DepEd formally opened the SY 2021-2022 on Sept. 13.

Private schools, however, were allowed to start their classes earlier.
Regular enrollment in public schools started on Aug. 16. This was extended by DepEd until Sept. 30 to accommodate late enrollees.
DepEd recorded 23, 026, 374 enrollees in public and private schools which include State Universities and Colleges (SUCs)/Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) which offer basic education since it started the regular enrollment for this SY.
The number of learners who participated in the Early Registration period from March to May are included current enrollment data. DepEd said there were 4,557, 327 Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners who registered early for this school year.
Of the running total, DepEd data showed there are 21, 077, 125 enrollees in public schools; 1, 891, 861 students enrolled in private schools; and 57, 388 learners in SUCs/LUCs.
Region IV-A or Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon (Calabazon) has the highest number of enrollment with 3, 596, 340, followed by Region III (Central Luzon) with 2, 745, 454 and the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,537, 053.
Meanwhile, enrollment in the informal sector or Alternative Learning System (ALS) is recorded at 202,603. This is 33.80 percent of last SY’s enrollment at 599,365.
In SY 2020-2021, DepEd has an actual enrollment of 26, 799, 736 as of May 15, 2021.
DepEd Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Nepomuceno Malaluan said that DepEd will end the release of the enrollment quick count on Sept. 20.
“We will release the official enrollment by end October after the learners' profiles in our Learner Information System have been updated by the schools,” Malaluan said in a Viber message sent to reporters.
“We will then be able to provide information on migration of learners (from public to private or vice versa), and ‘balik-aral’ or those that skipped last school year and returned this school year,” he added.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation in the country, the distance/blended learning set-up is once again implemented by DepEd this school year.
With face-to-face classes still prohibited by President Duterte, millions of learners in basic education learn their lessons at home through multiple delivery modalities such as printed modular (printed and offline); online learning; television and radio-based instruction; or a combination or blending of these modalities under “blended learning.”
Taking into consideration the challenges under a remote or distance learning scheme, the clamor for the gradual resumption of in-person classes continues to grow.

Since last year, DepEd has been proposing the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes in low risk areas. In December, the President initially allowed it but he recalled his decision even before it was implemented due to the emerging COVID-19 variants in the country.
DepEd, along with the Department of Health (DOH), is eyeing 120 schools for the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes once allowed by the President.
