Alan Cayetano considers running for president: ‘There has to be a Christ-centered candidate'

Former House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday said he is considering running for the top government position in the upcoming May 2022 national elections saying there has to be a candidate whose leadership is “Christ-centered” and “Bible-based.”

Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano

Cayetano said that while there are presidential candidates who are vocal in certain issues, there are potential bets who fail to take a stance, particularly on online cockfighting (e-sabong) and online casinos (e-casinos).

“Parang wala akong naririnig samantalang ito can really create a generation of zombies nap any sugal na lang imbes na trabaho (I don’t hear anyone saying that, while this can really create a generation of zombies that will concentrate on gambling instead of job and livelihood),” Cayetano said.

“Sa diwang yun (because of this), I’m really considering running for President,” the Taguig representative further said.

The lawmaker said what the public needs right now is a faith-based and values-oriented choice in the 2022 presidential elections.

“In the same way na nagbigay ang Lord ng choice (the Lord has given us the freedom of choice), I think people have to have a choice. Kailangan may kandidato na Christ-centered and Bible-based ang pamamaraan ng pagpapatakbo ng gobyerno (There has to be a candidate whose leadership is Christ-centered and Bible-based),” Cayetano said.

The former senator, however, said he acknowledges it is still up to the Filipino people to decide on what they want him to do in next year’s election and beyond.

“I’m just asking our kababayans (people) for prayers. Kayo naman siguro mas nakakaalam kung anong role ang gusto niyong gawin ng isang Alan Peter Cayetano in 2022 and beyond, at kung anong will ng Panginoon (I think the people knows best what role they want for Alan Peter Cayetano in 2022 and beyond would be and what is God’s will),” he said.

Cayetano unsuccessfully ran for vice president in the May, 2016 elections alongside then Davao City Mayor and now President Duterte. He eventually became House Speaker but was later forced to honor his term-sharing agreement and relinquish his post to Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco.
