The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has approved a new program that will create a pool of S&T experts and innovators who will help boost the agency’s research and development (R&D) capacity.

Department of Science and Technology

Dubbed as the “Science and Technology (S&T) Fellows” Program, it is set to be officially launched on November this year.

“With the country’s fight against COVID-19, we realized the need to double our S&T human resources here in our own home at DOST,” said Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña.

Once the program starts, the first batch of S&T fellows will be assigned in the different R&D institutes and councils of the department.

“The S&T fellows are expected to participate in the conceptualization, policy and funding development, and monitoring and evaluation of various R&D programs and projects,” he added.

The available positions for the first year of the program’s implementation are S&T Fellows I and II (MS graduates) and S&T Fellows III (Ph.D. graduates).

“It has always been the goal of R&D to deliver lasting change for the benefit of the people,” said Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara.

“Now more than ever, we need more S&T outputs that provide social and economic impact, and we need experts to do that,” she added.

The S&T Fellows Program is one of the programs of the DOST included in its Big 21 in 2021 event scheduled to be unveiled next week.

The event will showcase the department’s new technologies and programs that are seen to bring change in the coming years.
