The state's Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said a tree had fallen on a home in Prairieville. The victim, a 60-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday morning, Ida was downgraded to a tropical storm over southwestern Mississippi, about 16 hours after striking Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

PowerOutage.US reported that the hurricane had triggered a massive blackout across the two states, leaving at least 1 million customers in Louisiana and 80,000 more in Mississippi without power, while life-threatening floods along rivers were continuing.
