India gives highest 9.3 million COVID-19 vaccine jabs in one day


NEW DELHI, India -- Over 9.3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered to people across India on Friday, which is the highest single-day vaccine coverage, confirmed the federal health ministry.

The COVID-19 vaccination drive had begun in India in January this year.

According to the federal health ministry, in another significant achievement, the country's COVID-19 vaccination coverage crossed the 620 million-mark (620,943,580).

As many as 138 million Indian adults have received both doses so far, even as the target is to vaccinate around 900 million adults in the country.

The vaccination exercise as a tool to protect the most vulnerable population groups in the country from COVID-19 continues to be regularly reviewed and monitored at the highest level, said the federal ministry.

India has been one of the most suffered nations as far as pandemic spread is concerned. Till Friday morning, India's COVID-19 tally stood at 32,603,188, as 44,658 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country.

Besides, as many as 496 deaths due to the pandemic since Thursday morning took the total death toll to 436,861.
