Did you know that aside from roads and bridges, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is also tasked to build recreational venues like skateparks?

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar recently posted on his social media page a photo of a skateboarding park in Tagaytay City saying that it is among the sports facilities completed by the department.

According to the DPWH, the skateboarding park was built within almost three months in 2019. It was completed on Dec. 17, 2019 for the 30th Southeast Asian Games hosted by the Philippines.

It received a P30-million funding from the 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

"Yung infrastructure hindi lang puro kalsada, kailangan din natin ng mga pedestrian infrastructure, kailangan din natin ng mga infra para sa exercise, para sa quality of life (Infrastructure is not just about building roads, we also need infrastructures for pedestrians, for exercises, for quality of life)," Villar said.

"So ito po yung skatepark natin sa Tagaytay nagamit na ito at ongoing, meron tayong ginagawang bubong at meron din isang BMX park (This skatepark in Tagaytay was already utilized and some provisions like roofing and a BMX park is ongoing)," the secretary added.

While it was made for the last biennial meet, it is also intended as a recreational area in Tagaytay and will also serve as competition venues for future events.

The secretary also said that the public can go and visit the park to skate once the situation amid the pandemic gets better.
