A student of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)- Bicol Region Campus has bagged a bronze medal at the 17th International Geography Olympiad (iGEO 2021) held virtually on Aug. 10 to 16 in Istanbul, Turkey.
The PSHS congratulated its “geography wizard,” Victor Edwin E. Reyes for winning the bronze medal at the iGEO 2021.
“The Philippine Science High School System congratulates Victor Edwin E. Reyes of the PSHS-Bicol Region Campus for winning the bronze medal in the 17th International Geography Olympiad (iGEO 2021) organized virtually in Istanbul, Turkey from August 10-16,” the PSHS wrote on Facebook on Thursday, Aug. 19,
Held annually, the iGeo attracts the participation of the best geography students aged 16 to 19 from all over the world.
“Students chosen to represent their countries are the very best, chosen from thousands of students who participate enthusiastically in their own National Geography Olympiads,”the PSHS said.
Reyes described the iGEO2021 and similar contests he joined in the past as “not only challenges of recalling, but challenges of understanding and applying” what he has memorized.
“There are so many moving parts in the human social system, all affected by and affecting one another in subtle and varied ways. Understanding the flaws of our own society and culture through this lens is the first step to fixing those flaws,” he said.
The objectives of the iGEO are the following:
-Stimulate active interest in geographical and environmental studies among young people;
-Contribute positively to debate about the importance of geography as a senior secondary school subject by drawing attention to the quality of geographical knowledge, skills and interests among young people; and
-Facilitate social contacts between young people from different countries and in doing so, contribute to the understanding between nations.
The PSHS System also expressed its appreciation to Ceejay T. Abilay of PSHS-BRC “for doing his best to represent the country in iGEO 2021.”
Delia Cassasis served as coach of Reyes and Abilay.
