LOOK: Alexandra Trese's coat gets a terno twist

Alexandra Trese would approve this!

It cannot be denied that Netflix's "Trese" definitely put Filipino art and culture to the global stage. There is more to Philippine comics and mythology that the world needs to know, and the show gives viewers a taste of it. Plus, the series' protagonist Alexandra Trese surely made many Filipinas proud by standing her ground against evil forces, whether they are from another mystical land or residing at city hall.

One of the many that got inspired by the show is Veronica Baguio, owner and founder of Balik Batik. Much like the anime series, Veronica's clothing champions Filipino culture and heritage with its mastery in making contemporary Filipiniana looks and incorporating local textile.

To pay homage to the show's lead, Balik Batik crafted a terno creation inspired by what detective Trese is wearing on the pages of Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo's comics and the animated version on the streaming platform.

"We loved 'Trese' so much (I have personally watched it three times already). Alexandra is a tough, intelligent woman, which makes her inspiring," Veronica tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. "What we love the most is how the Filipino culture is seen in the show. After always watching the show, we came up with the idea of creating a piece inspired by Alexandra’s outfit."

Keeping the clean, simple quality of Alexandra's coat, Veronica used Oleg Cassini fabric for the black and white duchess satin for the lining. And to amplify the Filipino spirit, butterfly sleeves are added.

As a bespoke brand, many of Balik Batik's works are ordered by clients. But this project, Veronica a just wanted to see what the piece would look like if it was a terno.

"We wanted to transform Alexandra’s look while still keeping it very similar to her outfit," she explains. "We made sure to follow details such as the white lining on the sleeve and the buttons. What makes this unique is how it features a terno sleeve. We imagine it is something Alexandra would wear to a fancy event."
