Iza Calzado is new Darna

Producers of "Mars Ravelo’s Darna: The TV Series" pulled a surprise move recently, announcing their casting of Iza Calzado as Darna.

No, she's not replacing Jane de Leon.

Her manager, Noel Ferrer, said Iza will be portraying the role of another Darna -- the one who will pass on the power to Jane's character.

Iza, is, of course, elated with the announcement.

Note that it coincided with her 39th birthday.

“Naiyak ako! It’s one of the best birthday gifts! On different levels, nakaka-lift lang ng puso at spirits,” said Iza.

“Finally, I can claim to be part of the Pinoy superhero history! I almost had the chance in the past, but God had other plans. I was not meant to be that Darna but He surely prepared me to play this Darna. Everything always happens in His perfect time. I call it Divine Timing," she continued.

“Being a hero during these challenging times is exciting and female one at that just means so much more. Of course I do recognize that with great power comes great responsibility. As cliché as it sounds, there is truth to this.”

It was in 2014 when Angel Locsin was announced to star in a "Darna" flick to be directed by Erik Matti.

A lot has changed since with Angel and Erik dropping out of the project.

The ocinic role was then transferred to Liza Soberano who also backed out of the project eventually.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, it was announced that the film will no longer push through.

ABS-CBN later revealed that “Darna” will be airing as TV series.

Although the new director has yet to be introduced, the taping was said to be starting this September.
