Robredo congratulates Paalam after silver medal finish


Vice President Leni Robredo congratulated Filipino boxer Carlo Paalam on Saturday, August 7, for bagging the silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In a Twitter post, the vice president called Paalam’s silver medal finish a “meaningful way to cap off our Philippine delegation’s Tokyo Olympics journey.”

Robredo expressed her appreciation to Paalam for securing another Olympic medal for the Philippines.

“Maraming salamat (Thanks a lot), Carlo, sa all-out mong pagsabak sa bawat laban (to your all-out efforts in every fight)!” she tweeted Saturday night.

A former scavenger, Paalam bagged the silver medal in the men’s flyweight division after his split decision loss to Great Britain’s Galal Yafai.

By taking home the silver medal, Paalam is expected to receive at least P17 million in cash rewards and other incentives courtesy of private sponsors.

Robredo heaped praises again on all Filipino athletes who competed in the Tokyo Olympics.

“Sa buong line-up natin: Bawat isa sa inyo (To our whole line-up: Each one of you) makes me proud to be a Filipino,” she said in a post with an emoticon of the Philippine flag.

The Philippines has now secured one gold, two silver, and one bronze medals to finish as the best in Southeast Asia.
