Senators congratulate Petecio for silver medal finish

The Senate Committee on Sports on Tuesday, August 3 congratulated Nesthy Petecio for winning the Tokyo Olympics silver medal in women's featherweight boxing.

‘’Yours is a historic win for being the first Filipina to win an Olympic medal in boxing since we joined the Olympics almost a century ago,’’ committee chairman and Senator Christopher ‘’Bong’’ Go said.

‘’Bilang isang kapwa mo Dabawenyo at chair ng Senate Sports Committee, malaki ang paghanga ko sa ipinakita mong gilas at tapang sa loob ng boxing ring (As a fellow Davaoeno and chairman of the Senate sports committee, we are awed by your talent and bravery in the boxing ring),’’ he pointed out.

‘’With your unrelenting spirit, determination and competitiveness, you are one of the beacons that keep inspiring our people, especially our youth, amid trying times,’’ Go added.

Senator Panfilo M. Lacson, on the other hand, said that ‘’despite the problems we face at home, we Filipinos still have good reason to rejoice: One of our very own has given honor anew to the Philippines in the Olympics.’’

‘’Nesthy Petecio represented us well, with her fighting spirit on full display in her bout against Sena Irie of Japan,’’ Lacson, chairman of the Senate National Defense and Security committee, stressed.

‘’With her achievement, Nesthy has inspired us to punch above our weight class - not in the boxing ring but in the ring of daily life. Mabuhay ka, Nesthy! Mabuhay ang ating mga atleta! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!’’ he added.
