DOST, Los Baños LGU develop resilient vegetable supply chain management system

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has partnered with the local government unit of Los Baños to develop a “resilient” and “seamless” vegetable supply chain management system.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña disclosed that the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) project with the LGU of Los Banos is developing resilient local supply chains for vegetables to manage the risks and disruptions proactively and effectively.

“The production of vegetables is highly supported by S&T adopting the use of internal control system (ICS) for pesticide management and the recommended package of technology for organic vegetable production. Seamless supply chain management system has been developed for piloting,” he said in a report.

He explained that under this supply chain management system, the farmers bring their products to the established consolidation and distribution facility in the LGU to store, collect and manage produce,

“The products will then undergo proper sorting and grading and will be packaged at this site. After packaging, the product is then sent, via a logistic system, to wholesalers and retailers or directly to consumers utilizing online food delivery platforms and phone sales to minimize close contacts,” de la Peña said.

He cited that the LB Veggie Move web application was developed for both inventory and marketing system to guide the overall management of sourcing and distribution of vegetables.

The DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) said it continued conducting training on edible landscaping to further promote homestead food production among Filipino households.

The training focuses on the principles and practices of edible landscaping as well as its potential contribution to achieving food and nutrition security among Filipino households especially in this time of pandemic.

The training is part of the “Edible Landscaping Technology Promotion and Information Dissemination Campaign Project”, funded by the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR).
