At least 15 passengers and three crew members were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) from a boat off Socorro, Surigao del Norte last Sunday, July 25.
The motorbanca MBCA Retreat -1, which carried 18 individuals, departed from Barangay Sudlon, Socorro bound for Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte.
While traveling off Barangay Navarro, Socorro the propeller shaft of the motorbanca accidentally fell into the water. The boat captain immediately stopped the engine to prevent untoward maritime incidents.
The PCG said the motorbanca drifted approximately 500 meters away from its location due to strong winds and huge waves while waiting for rescue assistance.
Upon receiving information, PCG Station Surigao del Norte Commander Elaine Pangilinan deployed a search and rescue team to locate the troubled motorbanca.
The rescue team rendered immediate assistance and towed the distressed motorbanca to Feeder Port in Socorro for initial inquiries.
Pangilinan reminded seafarers to stay vigilant in venturing at sea particularly during rough sea condition.
