College of St. Benilde congratulated its student Hidilyn Diaz on becoming the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal.

The school, which is part of the La Salle institution, paid tribute to Diaz after her historic triumph in the women’s 55-kg category at the Tokyo Games.

“The Community of Christian Brothers of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde joins the Filipino nation in celebration of Hidilyn Diaz's weightlifting women's gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” St. Benilde said in a statement.

Diaz accepted the scholarship offered by CSB shortly after claiming a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She previously studied Computer Science for two years at the Unibersidad de Zamboanga in her hometown of Zamboanga City before focusing on her national team duties.

But Diaz took a leave of absence from St. Benilde in 2018 to focus on her Tokyo Olympic preparations.

St. Benilde, however, said that Diaz is intent on finishing her Business Management course.

“She has been on leave with her studies in preparation for the said Olympics, but has always said one of her dreams was to finish her Business Management course at Benilde,” the school said.
