Stormy weather brings out dolphins in northern Iloilo town

ILOILO CITY – More than a dozen dolphins appeared under stormy weather from typhoon “Fabian” in Concepcion, a coastal town in northern Iloilo.

In a live video taken by Berlin Gallardo, more than a dozen dolphins were spotted on Concepcion Bay just before noon Friday, July 23.

Gallardo, who was onboard a motor banca (wooden-hulled boat), initially thought the dolphins were people.

“Abi ko mga tawo/bata nga naga langoy o basi nadisgrasya sa lawod. Gin tan-aw ko gamit ang binoculars kag kita ko mga sirik/fins kag base sa ila paglangoy daw mga dolphins (I thought they were people or children swimming or maybe there was an an accident. I looked using the binoculars and saw they had fins and they were swimming like dolphins),” Gallardo said in a Facebook post.

“I checked to make sure and indeed they were dolphins similar to what I saw at Ocean Park before. We followed them to make sure they are safe while keeping my distance at the same time,” Gallardo added.

After a while, Gallardo recalled that they disappeared and couldn’t be seen anymore. “Hoping and praying they will find their way home or somewhere they'll be safe,” Gallardo added.

Meanwhile, Concepcion Mayor Raul Banias disclosed that Nean Delfin Gregorio, president of the municipal Association of Barangay Captains, called to inform him that a dead dolphin washed ashore in Macatunao Island.
