Senior killed, 500 families homeless in Davao City fire


DAVAO CITY – A 76-year-old man died while 500 families were left homeless in a fire that hit Punta Dumalag, Barangay Matina Aplaya, here, Saturday, July 17.

One of the fire victims identified the fatality Sunday, July 18, as her uncle, Reynaldo Siano Salinas. Salinas was reported missing during the fire.

Arson probers revealed that more than 100 houses were either gutted down or damaged by the fire which began about 5 p.m. and was controlled past 6 p.m. Also affected by the fire was the Diego Silang Elementary School.

The fire victims were evacuated at Matina Aplaya gymnasium.

Davao City Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte has provided much-needed assistance to fire victims.

Rep. Duterte has sent a team to the area to provide assistance to the fire victims such as food, tent, and portable toilets.

He is providing lunch and dinner for the fire victims for three consecutive days starting Sunday, July 18, after which his office will assess the situation.

Rep. Duterte’s office said that affected individuals with health concerns could seek assistance from his office.

His office will also coordinate with the Davao City Mayor’s Office, especially on providing construction materials and other needed relief assistance for the affected families.
