Cadano books final 16 spot in virtual chess

College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills bet Mel George Faitriz Cadano defeated Mapua's Yureeh Panganiban in the juniors elimination round of the NCAA Season 96 online chess tournament Wednesday, July 7.

The 16-year-old Cadano’s win secured him a spot in the round of 16 while eliminating Panganiban in the process.

Cadano joins FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz of Letran in the next round of the knockout stage of the virtual competition. Daluz topped last season's MVP Gal Brien Palasigue of San Beda last Tuesday.

The elimination round will continue until Friday and will be televised on GTV channel 11 of GMA-7, the league's new broadcast partner. The round of 16 will happen July 10-11, while the quarterfinals will be played on July 12-14.

The semifinal will be held on July 15 while the final is set for July 17.

The seniors’ tournament, on the other hand, will start on July 18.

The league's shortened Season 96 has just concluded the taekwondo poomsae and speed kicking competitions, as face-to-face competitions were not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
