Formaldehyde exists at home? Here’s one way to eliminate them


Being at the forefront of air purification technology, Dyson has highlighted the value of breathing the cleanest air possible. Today, they announced an even better batch of purification machines that now senses formaldehyde, too! 

But, wait, we breathe formaldehyde? It’s actually a colorless gas pollutant that can be found in furniture and wooden products that have been coated with formaldehyde-based resins such as plywood and fibrewood. Even insulating materials, paint, wallpapers, varnishes, and household cleaning products contain formaldehyde. And they all last for years, without us knowing that we breathe this on a daily basis. 

And with the ongoing pandemic (and reported Metro Manila smog), we stay indoors more often which makes us breathe formaldehyde more often. Dyson also shared that this gas type is 500 times smaller than particles, making it hard to capture. If left undetected, it remains in the air which leads to off-gassing due to prolonged exposure. “The off-gassing tendency of formaldehyde means that it can go undetected in a home for years. Dyson has engineered a machine that provides accurate and successful sensing, capture and destruction of the pollutant. Our solid-state sensor doesn’t dry out overtime, lasting the lifetime of the machine. The COVID-19 pandemic has raised global awareness about the air that we breathe and Dyson’s commitment to providing cleaner air through innovation and technology remains at the forefront of our mission,” says Alex Knox, vice president of environmental care.

They’re also one step ahead with its formaldehyde sensors that aren’t gel-based that can deteriorate over time. Theirs are made from an electro-chemical cell with an unique intelligent algorithm that can check data and sense this type of gas versus all the other particles that exist nearby. 

Its new solid-state formaldehyde sensing also comes with HEPA 13 standard filtration, removing 99.9 percent particles as small as .1 microns which means it can trap other particles such as allergens, bacteria, H1N1 virus, pollen, and moulds. Dyson Pure Cool Formaldehyde is also 20 percent quieter, reducing noise pollution also at home. Lastly, one can also opt for auto mode with a preferred room temperature and air quality levels that can be set via the Dyson Link App and voice control activation.
