Ilagan City prosecutor gunned down in Apayao residence

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A deputy city prosecutor of Ilagan City, Isabela was shot dead inside his house in Sitio Hanhan, Barangay Malama, Conner, Apayao, on Wednesday, June 23.

Police Col. Elmer Ragay, Police Regional Office-Cordillera intelligence chief, identified the victim as Atty. Victor Domingo Begtang Jr., assigned to the City Prosecutor Office.

Reports from the Conner police station said the victim was inside his house at 2:30 p.m. when two men riding a red-black Honda XRM motorcycle arrived.

One of them barged inside the house and shot Begtang four times.

The gunman returned to the waiting motorcycle driven by his companion and they fled toward an unknown direction while Begtang was taken to the Conner District Hospital where he was declared dead.

In a social media post, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-North Luzon headed by Atty. Lucky Damasen condemned the killing of Begtang who described him as a dedicated prosecutor in the province.

Damasen said the North Luzon IBP will issue an official statement condemning the killing and requesting the police to immediately solve the case.
