Ex-boxing champ Sonsona falls in drug bust


GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Police arrested last Saturday former two-time Philippine champion Eden Sonsona during a drug-bust operation conducted by police operatives in Barangay apopong, this city.

PMajor Patrick Elma, Police Station 2 commander, =said Sonsona was placed under surveillance the past month for his involvement in illegal drug trade prior to his arrest.

Police seized several grams of shabu from the suspect who is also a former regional champion.

Sonsona, 32, was crowned WBF international super featherweight in 2017 and WBC international Silver Super featherweight 2015. Prior to that, he captured the Philippine superflyweight and bantamweight belts.

He also worked as a gym instructor for a local fitness gym in the city.

Sonsona tallied 36 wins with 13 knockouts, 13 losses and two draws in his professional boxing career.

The suspect also tested positive for using illegal drugs after he was subjected to a drug test.

Police are set to file charges for selling and using prohibited drugs against the suspect.
