5.1-magnitude quake hits Davao Occidental

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Occidental on Thursday, June 10.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of temblor was plotted 68 kilometers (km) southeast of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

The agency has raised the quake’s magnitude from an earlier 4.4 to 5.1.

Phivolcs said the tremor, which was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 61 km, occurred at 10:42 a.m.

Intensity III or “weak” shaking was felt in Malungon, Sarangani.

Intensity II or “slightly felt” shaking was reported in Malita, Davao Occidental; Alabel and Kiamba, Sarangani.

Intensity I was monitored in Tupi, South Cotabato

Instrumental Intensity II was measured in General Santos City and Kiamba, Sarangani; while Intensity I in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected after the quake.
