It seems the proposed Duterte-Duterte tandem in next year's elections may not push through.
President Duterte is still opposed to the prospect of his daughter Davao Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio joining the presidential race next year.
The President talked to his daughter Monday and discouraged her anew from seeking the presidency, insisting it was a thankless job.
Before frowning on a potential presidential bid of his daughter, Duterte bared that he prefers to retire next year amid calls for him to run for vice president in the 2022 national elections.
"Si Inday kinausap ko talaga kagabi (I talked to Inday last night and told her) Do not run. Do not ever, ever commit the mistake of running for presidency," Duterte said during an interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy Tuesday night.
"I don't mean to insult the Filipino people. Presidente wala ka talagang makuha. Wala para iyo except for one thing, yung sense of fulfillment para sa kapwa tao mo na may nagawa ka (You won't get anything as president. Nothing except for one thing -- the sense of fulfillment that you've done something for your countrymen)," he added.
In trying to dissuade Mayor Sara, Duterte insisted that he would only feel sorry for his daughter since the presidency involves heavy workload but with low salary. Constant criticisms and insults from detractors also come with territory, he bewailed.
"It's an empty.. puro ka na lang trabaho diyan (you'll just work)," he said.
"Unless magtakbo ka ng presidente tapos mangurakot ka, you'll become a billionaire or millionaire whichever you want. Pero is that the life you want? Kung sobra-sobra ang pera, anuhin mo 'yan? (Unless you run for president and become corrupt, you'll become a billionaire or millionaire whichever you want. But is that the life you want? If you have lots of money, what will you do with it?)," he added.
President Duterte previously asked his daughter not to follow in his footsteps, saying the presidency was not a job for a woman. He wanted to spare her from the hardship that comes with the highest government post.
The President's daughter has topped recent surveys of potential presidential contenders in the 2022 elections but she previously declared she has no plans to seek the top Palace post. The mayor, in a statement issued last January, thanked her supporters for their trust and confidence, telling them to let her run for president in 2034 instead.
In the same interview Tuesday, Duterte said he would resist calls to run for vice president next year, insisting he wants to return home to Davao and retire. He explained that he wanted to avoid speculations he wanted to perpetuate himself in power.
