CEU School of Law and Jurisprudence faculty member is new PH chief justice


Centro Escolar University School of Law and Jurisprudence’s faculty member Hon. Alexander Gesmundo has been appointed as the 27th Chief Justice of the Philippines by President Rodrigo Duterte and took his oath before SC Senior Associate Justice Estela M. Perlas Bernabe on April 5, 2021.

Hon. Gesmundo was initially appointed by the President as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on August 14, 2017. With this position, he became the chairperson of the Technical Working Group for the Revision of the Law Student Practice Rule, and the Organizing Committee for the 2019 Legal Education Summit; vice chairperson of the Special Committee for the Rules of Procedure for Admiralty Cases, Special Committee for Rules on Inspection (under the Philippine Competition Act), Sub-Committee for the Revision of 1997 Rules on Criminal Procedure then chaired by Sr. Justice Josue N. Bellosillo, and the Special Committee on the Rules of Procedure in Election Contests before the First Level Courts.

He finished his law degree in Ateneo de Manila University and passed the bar examination in 1985. The same year, he served as trial attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General. He was also named as Most Outstanding Solicitor in 1998 and was promoted to assistant solicitor general in 2002.

Prior to his appointment as chief justice, he was an active member of the CEU School of Law and Jurisprudence and taught Civil Procedure and Practice Court.
