Bretman Rock wins MTV’s Breakthrough Social Star, dedicates award to AAPI


Here's what the Filipino-American beauty vlogger said in his 'unscripted' speech

Social media personality Bretman Rock snagged the Breakthrough Social Star award at the two-day MTV Movie & TV Awards last May 17, 2021, Monday.

Since his early days in social media in 2016, Bretman Rock has shown that he knows what it takes to be internet famous, which is beyond just being funny. Now with over 16 million Instagram followers and 8.44 million YouTube subscribers, the Fil-Am beauty vlogger truly deserved his first Golden Popcorn trophy.

The 22-year-old dedicates his win to the Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) and the LGBTQ+ communities, both of which have been targets of violent attacks in the US in the past months.

"I would like to thank everyone that watched me grow up on the internet. It's probably the most traumatizing I've ever done in my entire life. But it's all worth it because I'm here onstage accepting this award," Bretman said. "This award is for all the Asian Americans who in me, all the Pacific Islanders, and most importantly, this is for all the LGBTQ community."
