DILG records more than 18,000 face mask violations


A total of 18,862 individuals not wearing face masks were accosted since has President Duterte ordered an intensified operation against those who are not wearing fae mask, or improperly using them, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said.

In a report to the President Monday night, May 10, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said that 9,379 of the violators were issued warnings; 8,027 were fined; 491 underwent community service; 904 were arrested and 61 were subjected to inquest proceedings.

Assuring the continuous enforcement of the face mask regulation, Año confirmed having conferred with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in the setting up of guidelines on the rules against not wearing face masks and prohibitions on mass gathering will be implemented.

The DILG chief also reported that 280 people were caught violating the provisions against mass gatherings which is a violation of the physical social distancing regulation.

Of these mass gathering violators, 244 were warned; 35 were fined and one was arrested.

Año also noted that 5,473 individuals were recorded for violating the rule on physical distancing with 4,071 being warned; 1,011 fined; 205 doing community service and 186 being subjected to inquest proceedings.

He also reported the breakdown of the ayuda (cash aid) disbursement in the NCR (National Capital Region (NCR)-plus covering the areas of Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal which were placed under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) from March 29 to April 11.

In Metro Manila, Año said 9,235,469 beneficiaries already got their ayuda amounting to P18.8 billion for an 82.66 accomplishment rate while P2.4 billion cash aid were distributed to 2,483,985 recipients in Bulacan for an 83.72 disbursement rate.

For Cavite, 2,559,602 individuals received a total of P2.55 billion cash aid accounting for 74.31 percent of the intended benefactors while 2,559,498 or 94.17 percent recipients in Laguna got their share.

In Rizal, 1,984,159 people were given their ayuda which translates to 75.94 percent cash aid distribution rate.

The DILG also received 112,659 various ayuda related complaints which included qualified people not included in the list of beneficiaries.

Of these complaints, 62,137 have been resolved while 49,283 others are still under probe.

With regards to the illegal drug campaign, Año noted that the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other anti-narcotics teams conducted 1,121 operations from May 1 to 9 where 1,543 drug personalities were arrested with 19 deaths and 38 surrenders.

In the 10-day operation, Año reported that 29,981.10 kilos of shabu and 516.9 kilos of marijuana amounting to P265,904,094 were seized by the anti-narcotics authorities. (Chito A. Chavez)
