Uniqlo collaborates again with Marimekko to bring fun and color to your summertime dressing

Pieces from Uniqlo x Marimekko 2021 collection

Nothing can best describe spring-summer dressing than colors and prints. Sure, Miranda Priestly may frown on your floral-for-spring ensemble or your look-at-me colors for the beach. But that's the thing about classic styles, they have perennial charms and they instantly uplift your mood, which is totally not cliché.

That's the theme of the latest collaboration collection of Japanese retail giant Uniqlo with Finnish design house Marimekko—the Joyful Summer. Taking its inspiration from Nordic midsummer traditions and the sun's invigorating warmth, Uniqlo x Marimekko 2021 collection aims to spark happiness this season through style, even if we are staying indoors.

The collection merges the Japanese brand's clothing philosophy with seven bright patterns by Marimekko's Maija Isola, Maija Louekari, and Annika Rimala. It also highlights the works of Fujiwo Ishimoto, who created 400 patterns for Marimekko from 1974 to 2006. Present in the collections are his prints embodying Finnish nature and tradition such as "Seitsemän kukkaa" (seven flowers) design, "Talkoot" (work party) floral design, and "Pikkulempi" (little love) pattern.

"We are delighted to collaborate with Marimekko once again and particularly pleased to feature, for the first time, patterns that Japan's Fujiwo Ishimoto designed for Marimekko," says Yuki Katsuta, head of research and development at Uniqlo Co., Ltd. "His prints, which combine Scandinavian design with Japanese elements, are bold yet delicate, and unique."

Filled with sunshine and wonder, the summer-perfect prints are produced in a wide range of denims, dresses, and accessories. All playful but easy to wear, the pieces best-suited for WFH virtual meetings, outdoor errands, and intimate gatherings.

"The print selection was chosen to reflect the beauty and energy of this magical time of the year," says Minna Kemell-Kutvonen, design director for home and print design at Marimekko. "We believe the language of design is universal and we hope this collection will bring people around the world a big splash of summer joy."

The Uniqlo x Marimekko 2021 collection will be launched on May 21, 2021. Discover more about it here.
