DOH detects 5,685 new COVID-19 cases nationwide


The Department of Health (DOH) reported more than 5,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases nationwide on Wednesday, May 5.

Based on the latest case bulletin, there were 5,685 new individuals who tested positive for the viral illness, pushing the total number of active cases to 62,713.

Of the active cases, 94.4 percent have mild symptoms, 1.8 percent are asymptomatic, 1.2 percent are in critical condition, 1.6 percent are severe, while 1.02 percent are in moderate condition.

The Philippines’ cumulative tally of cases rose to 1,073,555.

The DOH noted that 92.5 percent of the overall tally have already recovered or 993,042 recoveries. This figure includes the 8,961 new survivors that were logged on Wednesday.

However, 178 patients died due to COVID-19, raising the death toll to 17,800. The country’s case fatality rate stood at 1.66 percent.

At present, 64 percent of intensive care unit (ICU) beds dedicated for COVID-19 patients nationwide are occupied, while 45 percent of isolation beds have been utilized, the DOH said.
