The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Malay town, Aklan province identified the casualty as Modesto Apellido.

The 44-year-old native of Bingawan town, Iloilo province was one of the four who were temporarily buried when the soil eroded along Sitio Putol of Sambiray village during late afternoon of April 17.

Injured were Darius Castillo, Jade Daryl Castillo and Niño Jay Castillo.

Lieutenant Colonel Don Dicksie de Dios, Malay PNP chief, said a hillside portion eroded probably due to rainfall days before the incident.

It had to take members of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP-Malay) and the Malay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) to rescue the three injured workers and retrieve the body of Apellido.

The four were constructing a retaining wall along a by-pass road that buses, van and other vehicles usually pass through going to the Caticlan Port, which is the port across Boracay Island.
