COVID-19 cases in Pasay City drop

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Pasay City continue to decline, according to the data of the City Health Office (CHO).

The city's downward trend in cases was first cited by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benjamin Abalos Jr. who lauded the city's initiatives to combat and stop the spread of COVID-19 in the area.

Citing figures from the CHO, Abalos said that active cases in the city dropped from 987 on March 24 to 902 on March 27.  In its update last March 29, the city's active cases dropped further to 888.

The downward trend in cases continued as the city on Tuesday reported 10,220 or 90.58 percent patients have already recovered with 127 classified as new recoveries.

The total number of active cases was also down to 781 from the 888 the previous day with 92 new infections. The city’s total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic is 11,283.

First of the local cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 were detected in Pasay City on March 2. Weeks before, a spike in COVID-19 cases was recorded in the city.

The City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU) suspected the surge could have been from the more contagious United Kingdom (UK) variant of the disease and residents who got tested outside the city and did not inform their barangays.

“It took Pasay one month, siya nagpapakain, massive swabbing, massive testing, ang laki ng nagastos ng Pasay. Isang buwan itong gamutan (It took a month for Pasay to handle the situation, the city fed people, conducted massive swab tests, and it was costly)," Abalos said.

He added that what Pasay did is somewhat the same that will be done in Metro Manila.

Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano, for her part, rallied her constituents to keep up the good work of observing the basic health protocols and practicing the daily EMI habit to continue the downward trend of cases in the city.

She also reiterated her call for the public to fully support the planned citywide vaccination.
