House passes bill renaming Mactan airport terminals to honor Lapu-Lapu


The House of Representatives on Thursday, March 25, passed on third and final reading a bill proposing to name Terminals 1 and 2 of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport after Filipino hero Lapu-Lapu.

Voting 195-0-0, members of the House approved House Bill No. 8986 on final reading.

The measures seeks to honor the "brace and fearless" chieftain in commemoration of the quincentennial anniversary if the victory at Mactan.

Under the bill, the first and second terminals of the Mactan-Cebu airport shall be renamed "Lapu-Lapu Domestic Terminal" and "Lapu-Lapu International Terminal", respectively.

Lapu-Lapu is considered as the first Filipino hero. History records say he led local fighters in the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521 to resist colonization. His warriors defeated and killed Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan during the clash.
