Filipina artists team up for an exhibit celebrating Women’s Month

It’s all about women power on the canvas and beyond it

Paulina Sotto, Navy and Raquel Bautista, and Celeste Licaroz

There is no denying of the fact that art depicting women is among the best masterpieces in the world. There are Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Monalisa” and Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” and locally with “Dalagang Bukid” by Fernando Amorsolo and Juan Luna’s “España y Filipinas” as proofs to women’s contribution to the history of art as muses.

But as time passed, women took on the role of being the artist as well, giving a sense of diversity and empowerment to their artistic roles as we can see from the works of Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama, and Betsy Westendorp, among others.

That is what Altro Mondo Gallery wants to celebrate this Women’s Month, the creative spirit that comes from female artists, particularly, from Filipina creators. With the “Of Art and Her Stories” exhibit, the gallery will put on the spotlight the best works of artists such as Valen Valero, Rax and Navy Bautista, Sally Ponce Enrile, Paulina Sotto, Marge Organo, Aryan San Diego, Helena Alegre, Karen de Pano-Picadizo, Beatrix Syjuco, Camille Quintos, Lara Latosa, Chinnich Candao, and Erzil Morales.

In the case of “Of Art and Her Story,” one will genuinely feel the emotions coming out of each stroke, each sheen, each scratch of the featured art pieces. And maybe, just wonderfully maybe, understand the creative processes that consumed all our female artists during their moments of creation. From mixed media, sculptures and even wearable art, “Of Art and Her Story” will give you more than just stories to tell.

“It is where women and their art forms meld in wonderful visual harmony to tell each of their unique stories through their creations,” the gallery says. “Allow this venue to let you experience the glorious inspiration only a woman-force can give.”

The exhibit will be available for viewing on March 20, 2021 at Altro Mondo Gallery located at Chino Roces Ave. in Makati City.
