BI rejects plea of protest rally-joining Dutchman not to deport him

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has turned down the appeal of a Dutch national not to deport him after he had been found to have participated in anti-government demonstrations.

Otto Rudolf De Bries made the appeal after the BI board of commissioners (BOC) cancelled his permanent resident visa in November last year to pave the way for his immediate deportation.

In his motion for reconsideration filed last month, De Vries said the cancellation of his visa was without legal basis.

His visa was revoked after government intelligence operatives submitted documentary evidence including pictures wherein he was found actively participating in protest rallies in Manila and Pasig City.

The BOC tagged him as an undesirable alien and ordered him to leave immediately. He has been staying in the country since September 2019.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said foreigners have no right in joining partisan political activities. He said this was a clear violation of the conditions of their stay.

"We have been reminding foreign nationals not to participate in any political activity pro or against the government even for holders of permanent resident visas," the BI chief declared.
