Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao said he dreams to see all corrupt government officials behind bars.
Pacquiao injected his own “aspiration” for the country when the Senate was commending Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto on Monday, March 1, for being recognized as one of the US State Department’s international “anti-corruption champions”.
“Ang pangarap ko, Mr. President, sa buong buhay ko na makita ang lahat ng mga kawatan dyan sa gobyerno na nandoon sa kulungan. Magsama-sama sila (My dream, Mr. President, is to see all thieves in government in jail. They should be together in jail),” he said.
“Kaya naghihirap ang bansa natin because of them, sa kanilang pagnanakaw sa gobyerno (Our country is suffering because of them, because of them stealing from the government),” he added.
Earlier, Pacquiao blamed the “widespread corruption” and the government’s negligence to the plight of poor communities for the country’s insurgency problem.
He had also dared all “rich” politicians to “share their wealth and…stop stealing from people”.
The boxer-turned-government official has been going around the country for various relief campaigns, which included his distribution of P1,000 “cash gift” for each indigent attendee.
Last December, he assumed as president of the administration party Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), which is chaired by President Duterte.
Despite these, he kept mum about his plans for the 2022 national elections.
Meanwhile, he thanked Sotto “for serving Pasig [City] and inspiring our people with integrity and excellence.”
“‘Yan ang kailangan natin, may takot sa Panginoon at ini-implement nang tama kung ano ang tama para sa ating mga kababayan (That is what we need in the country, officials who are God-fearing and are implementing policies properly for their people),” he said of the local chief executive.
