P70 M needed for construction of Baguio City slaughterhouse

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Benjamin Magalong here said the city needs at least P70 million to construct a state-of-the-art abattoir in a portion of the 10-hectare property of the Department of Agriculture at the Baguio Dairy Farm that was ceded to the city government for public use.

Magalong said the request for allocation and sourcing of funds for the project has been submitted to the city council’s finance committee.

City Administrator Bonifacio dela Peña said technical personnel of the City Buildings and Architecture Office (CBAO) are currently preparing the program of work and cost estimates of the project.

Dela Peña said that the design of the abattoir will be similar to the state-of-the-art slaughterhouse of Tanauan City, Batangas.

Personnel of the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVO), CBAO, and City Engineering Office (CEO) had earlier conducted a benchmarking activity to replicate the slaughterhouse here.

Dela Pena said that the slaughterhouse might only be one-third in size compared to Tanauan City’s because of the limited land area available within the Baguio Dairy Farm.

He said it is high time to modernize the city’s slaughterhouse because of the emerging technologies and the facility needs a wider space due to the increasing number of animals being butchered as a result of the higher demand for meat products.
