Dubbed as accident toll board, the signage bears figures indicating the number of deaths and injuries caused by vehicular accidents that have happened in the area.

Barangay Gaas Capt. William Genil said that in the past two years, 32 people were killed and 75 others were injured due to road crashes in the area.

The signage was installed by Cyril Velasco as part of his advocacy to promote safety to promote safety driving.

Genil said most of the accidents in the area were blamed to reckless driving such as overspeeding. The victims were found to be drunk during the accidents, Genil added.

The latest fatality was the daughter of the former barangay captain of Barangay Gaas.

Genil said there had been stories that the place is haunted hence the numerous accidents. “Actually, I don’t believe that the place is haunted. If you just avoid overspeeding, accidents can be prevented,” Genil said.

The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group-Cebu welcomed the installation of the signage.

Police Major Mike Gingoyon, chief of HPG Cebu, said authorities should focus more on finding solutions to address the increasing road accidents.

“The increasing deaths due to road crashes are very alarming. Hopefully this will really come to stop,” said Gingoyon.

Gingoyon said motorists should always practice safe driving, lamenting that some drivers drive liken they are on a race track when traveling at Transcentral Highway.

He said he is hoping that the installation of the death toll board would bring down the number of road accidents in the area.
