Duterte urges people to pray more: Only God can save this planet

Only God can save the planet as people around the world are confronted with many problems, from the coronavirus pandemic to climate change.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte

President Duterte made this admission about the supreme being as he urged the public to "pray more" to attain salvation.

"There are so many things really coming really our way, problems. If you want to have an advice, if you're ready to get one, there is only one thing really that can save this planet. It's God," he said in his televised address Wednesday, Feb. 24. "Maybe you should pray more, whatever the god (you believe in)," he added.

Duterte said he intends to offer prayers too. "Ako I have my own god. Of course we have the same god as everybody," said Duterte.

The President turned religious in his televised address just after discussing the impact of climate change in the country. According to Duterte, the country was in trouble as the warming of the planet has caused extreme weather systems such as heavy rains and floods.

Duterte said he was thankful to the Lord that the country's first tropical storm Auring spared many parts of the country. He said the storm veered away from Davao and other parts of Mindanao and instead hit Surigao del Sur.

"Nag-coast line lang siya. Ang Mindanao was spared. Davao was spared. We have to thank the good Lord for that," he said.

The President also appealed to the public to continue to observe health measures while waiting for the arrival of the country’s vaccine supply. He said wearing of masks could help protect them from the virus and curb the spread of the disease.
