Kanlaon Volcano still in ‘abnormal’ state, says Phivolcs

The Kanlaon Volcano still continues to exhibit "abnormal" conditions as Alert Level 1 is still in place, the Phillippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Friday, Feb. 19.

In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs said that three volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours.

"Moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that rose 400 meters before drifting northwest and southwest were observed," it said.

"DOST-Phivolcs would like to remind the public that Kanlaon Volcano is at Alert Level 1, which means that it is an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest," it added.

Entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited "due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, the Phivolcs warned.

"Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano's summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft," it added.
