PNVF taps new committee for formation of national team

A committee made up of stakeholders from the Philippine National Federation Inc. (PNVF) will be in charge of the national team selection as the association eyes the Southeast Asian Games gold medal in the coming editions.

PNVF President Tats Suzara bared this plan and said the decision will not longer be in the hands of the coaching staff alone, which has been a common practice for team sports.

The commission will be made up of seven members headed by a chairman and a secretary, who are experienced in setting up guidelines for the selection.

Suzara said he will sit as co-chairman in the commission.

Newly elected to lead the federation last month, Suzara hopes this change would increase the level of competitiveness of the national teams that would compete in various international tournaments like the SEAG, Asian Games and other FIVB-sanctioned events.

This would also pave the way to a bigger pool of national players.

Suzara sets an ambitious goal of winning the gold medal in the next two SEAG editions to be held in Vietnam late this year and Cambodia in 2023.

“If we cannot get the gold in Vietnam, we target the next SEAG in Cambodia,” said Suzara, a member of the FIVB marketing committee and head of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) marketing and development committee.

The PH men’s team snagged a historic silver medal at the 2019 SEAG that the country hosted, while the women’s squad last won a medal at the 2005 Manila edition where it got bronze.
