In a statement on Tuesday, Villar said "the widening of Canawan Bridge in Barangay Canawan, Salug from two (2) lanes to four (4) lanes is expected to ease congestion of vehicles and improve the delivery of goods and services for the locals in the area."

The DPWH said the 40.33-meter Canawan Bridge has a total budget allocation of P43.21 million funded under 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA). It also included slope protection work "to avoid or minimize erosion or soil disturbance."

The DPWH added that 12 solar powered lamps with post were installed on the side of the bridge as a safety feature especially during night time "making it the first bridge in the 3rd Legislative District of Zamboanga del Norte with the best illumination."

"Now, the widened and well-lighted Canawan Bridge provides safer roads and better travel experience, accommodating an increasing number of motorists from eastern side of Zamboanga del Norte and western side of Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga City," the DPWH said.
