DENR: face masks and shields, gloves should be properly disposed

In an PTV news interview with DENR undersecretary Benny Antiporda, he revealed that ç "Face masks, face shield, and gloves are being used to protect lives. That's the main objective, but the indiscrimination of the proper disposal has defeated its purpose," shares Antiporda on how this improper waste disposal can lead to the possibility of putting the trash collectors in danger.

Antiporda announced that they have started putting yellow bins in each barangays with a signage reminding citizens of its purpose which is for the disposal of healthcare waste. "Seal them well and put it inside the yellow trash bin, so that when the trash collectors arrive, they know that it's suspected contaminated waste."

These efforts started last December with Manila. "It's a pilot project," says the undersecretary. They have already distributed 100 in the city and they hope to release 1,600 this February.

He admitted that it will be a bit more challenging in condominiums. "Alam naman natin, the last and least priority ang basura. Kinukuha na po natin ang atensyon ng lahat ng LGUs. Kausap rin namin ang DILG and MMDA to seek for their assistance," adds Antiporda.
