Cicely Tyson, Hollywood star and former model, dies at 96

Hollywood star and former model Cicely Tyson, who was praised for her electrifying portrayals of Black women on movies, theater and television, died on Thursday, Jan. 27, her family announced.


“With heavy heart, the family of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful transition this afternoon. At this time, please allow the family their privacy,” according to Larry Thompson, her manager, who read the family's official statement.

No other details were given.

Tyson led a colorful life in show business. In 2013, she won a Tony Award at age 88. She was also nominated for her role in "Sounder" She also won two Emmys, one for the TV drama "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman."

Her memoir, “Just As I Am,” was published this week.

Tributes later poured for the pioneering Black star from her colleagues and fans.
